A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
