US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in 2019. Back then, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.
