The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
