Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
