Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
