Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
