Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
