Al Gore has suggested that concern of facing pressure from Donald Trump may have prompted Bill Gates to retreat on his environmental position.

Labeling Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history”, Gore warned that the president’s support of oil and gas and withdrawal from clean power is “severely harming” the American economic system.

Climate Damage and Financial Consequences

In an interview at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore stated, “Trump’s already doing a lot of damage on the climate. Perhaps the biggest harm he’s doing is to the United States itself.”

He pointed out that the Asian nation is now exporting green technology with a total sales figure that exceeds all fossil fuel exports from the U.S., a trend that is speeding up quite dramatically.

The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal

The tech billionaire, formerly a prominent voice in climate action, recently stated for moving the environmental emergency to a lower priority, in favor of health issues.

Gore voiced confusion at this change, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate further puzzled every climate scientist that I know and respect.”

“Yeah, the president approves. That may be what the billionaire aimed at.”

Gore noted that after Trump’s re-election, Gates fired most of his climate staffers, went to the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.

Concern Over Backlash

Gore proposed that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be fearful of facing retaliation by Trump. “It’s possible that he is genuinely concerned that the president will target him,” Gore stated.

Trump reacted to Gates’ reversal with praiseful social media posts.

Gore added, “The sole positive feedback of what he put out last week was from Donald Trump. Yes, he approves. Perhaps what he intended.”

Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy

Gore stressed that framing the climate crisis and global health crisis as opposing choices is misguided.

“The notion that there is a binary choice between health and climate has been roundly rejected by virtually every scientist in this field,” he said.

“It’s completely irrational that governments are requiring taxpayers to subsidise the destruction of our collective tomorrow.”

Gore pointed out that the Lancet published a report on the same day as Gates’ statement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of inaction on climate.

Advocating for Smarter Investments

Instead of taking money away from climate action, Gore argued that Gates should push for repurposing the massive sums spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward health and climate solutions.

“Accelerating solutions to the environmental emergency is one of the single most effective ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he stated.

Supporting International Cooperation

Gore strongly supported the UN climate conference process, explaining that they accomplish far more than they are recognized for.

“The Cop process acts as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that assemble every year,” he said. “Numerous groups come up with their own deals that move things forward.”

“These international meetings is one of the key factors that the sustainability revolution has shifted into high gear.”

He added that businesses and nations are pushing ahead with new technology and implementing clean power and other low-carbon initiatives.

Positive Progress and Generational Change

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “generational change” in the U.S., with many people turning towards climate action even as the national leadership dismantles them.

He cautioned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent election defeats for Republican candidates.

“It’s entirely mistaken out there that somehow we are losing ground.”

Gore praised Zohran Mamdani for his successful run for NYC leadership, noting that while he did not agree with some of his ideas, his political skills were remarkably evident.

A Visual Warning at Cop30

At the summit, Gore presented delegates with a slide show of horrors caused by the environmental emergency.

Standing before a huge projection screen showing images of recent catastrophes exacerbated by climate change, Gore stated, “It is literally insane that we are allowing this to continue.”

He spoke passionately while showing visuals of extreme dry spells in the rainforest, melting polar ice, and devastating weather in Southeast Asia, Jamaica, South America, the Pacific nation, and the U.S..

“How long are we going to do nothing and keep increasing temperatures so that these sort of events get even worse?” he questioned.

Preparing for Climate Impacts

Gore emphasized the need to prepare and prevent, but cautioned that if this irrational behavior continues—using the sky as an open sewer—some impacts will be extremely challenging to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His main focus at the conference has been to promote the Climate Trace project, which monitors global warming pollutants and air pollutants causing wellness issues globally.

“We are very excited about these innovative technologies,” Gore stated. “We possess the tools and the deployment models. Some people think we lack the government commitment, but as I like to remind people, political will is a replenishable asset.”
