The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
