High-level negotiations including US, Russian, and Ukrainian delegates began in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, representing the most recent step in efforts to achieve a peace agreement to conclude the protracted war in the region.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, declared that any revised peace plan must adhere to the “spirit and letter” of what was covered during earlier summit talks between the two nations.

European leaders are reportedly struggling to remain involved in the process as US officials take the lead.

Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, who has stepped forward as a key interlocutor between Washington and European officials, stated that the coming days would be critical in attempts to find a peace settlement.

He allegedly spoke with the Ukrainian president and the alliance officials, emphasizing that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and while European security matters are for Europe to resolve.”

At the same time, the French leader, Emmanuel Macron, warned against a settlement that would represent a “surrender” for the nation.

“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. Does that mean that it is what must be accepted by the Ukrainians and the Europeans? Absolutely not,” he declared.

American proposal was originally made up of numerous clauses and was based on discussions between US and Russian representatives, with contributions from Ukrainian security officials.
